Tetrads: Evolution of Smart Phone Technologies

I appreciated this assignment as it afforded the opportunity to take a look back at how far Celluar Phone Technologies have evoluted within such a short period of time. Although the first mobile phone was invented in 1947, the first sale occurred in 1983.

The Mobile Phone has enjoyed a rapid evolution of appearance, style, and capabilities in less than a 30-year timespan. Can anyone remember when the phone was so bulky until it was impossible to place in your pocket? Or remember the costs incurred in purchasing "airtime"? Now, Everyone owns these devices, with the threat of making landlines obsolete within the near future: Smart Phones are becoming the communication device of choice for both home and work. What a difference a few decades make...

  1. Great post! I remember the olive green rotary phone that we rented from the phone company when I was a youngster. Then I remember the first dial pad phone that we had installed in our kitchen. It was lemon yellow and had a spiral cord that was about 50 feet long. I have fond memories of my mother talking on the phone with the cord flying across the room, getting caught on everything, and me ducking for my life! Then came the very large cordless phone that had a giant antenna and semi-clear reception - I could now talk on the phone in my bedroom!

You talk about the costs associated with mobile phone technology. Do you think that Skype, Google, and other companies will make this technology almost free in the future? If the cost isn't monetary, what do you think it will be? Advertisements?

  2. Mr. Chappelear,

As I was completing this assignment, I marveled at how rapid the changes have occurred within this area of technology.

There are currently some smart phone models that have already the ability to Skype. I premise in the future that costs will continue to decrease as the availability of technology increases. Yes, costs must be a consideration. I have both Pandora and Slackder: both offer versions with and without advertisements. AT&T are revising their current unlimited data plan option for smart phone users. This may be the trend in the future as well.
